{89/366 | JJ} White on Black
The Big Island is so different when compared to older islands, such as Maui or Oahu. You can be in one location, surrounded by giant ferns, banyon trees, and other tropical plants, and then drive for 15 minutes and be in sparsely treed rolling hills, and then drive 15 more minutes and be surrounded by nothing but black lava rock. North of Kona, all along the roadside is pumice graffiti. People take tons of white rocks and spell out the names of loved ones, personal messages, or tributes to those who have passed. The contrast of pure white on deep black is beautiful on the beach, and an interesting read on the roadside.
